ABOUT ME

FRIEDERIKE VON STACKELBERG PHOTOGRAPHY

I am a professional photographer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. After studying photography in Berlin, I was hired by the German Press Agency (dpa) in Frankfurt, where I covered the end of the cold war. Since then I have travelled the world, including stints in Japan, Taiwan, India and Kenya, an experience that has triggered a passion for the diversity of cultures across the continents. Through my art I am sharing my own perception of places and cultures around the globe. In Tokyo I learned the art of Sumi-e, a type of brush painting, using ink in all possible gradations. Similar to black and white photography, it sketches moments with a brushstroke, a technique I developed to enhance my photography. In Taipei I studied Chinese Art and worked at the National Palace Museum. The deeper knowledge of Eastern Art has greatly influenced my multi-media work. Portraits as well as fashion and art photography have been the main focus throughout my career. The essence of my art lies in integrating and capturing a moment in time, so that the viewer may get an impression beyond the sense of sight, and perhaps experience the spiritual and emotional fragment, I had felt whilst creating my work.
